What is the importance of social media for business really? Why use social media for business if it’s a social networking site? Why is social media important today?
If you’re here reading this post right now, it’s likely because you’re curious about either one, or all of the questions I listed above.
So what I’m going to do is explain the importance of social media and how to utilize it to improve your marketing efforts online.
What Is Social Media?
Well, the first question we should address before we go any further, what exactly is social media?
Social Media is known as an interactive technology platform that allows its members to connect, share and/or create information, learn, find helpful resources, develop ideas, etc.
As a result of using social media, people are allowed to easily stay connected and up to date with the latest trends, news and more. Although, there are downsides to using social media, here in this article we’re going to focus on the business aspect of social media.
Benefits of Social Media for Business
The benefits of social media for business are actually quite intriguing. Depending on how businesses use social media for marketing, business owners and marketers are allowed to reach more people and stay in the mind of their fans, followers, customers, etc.
What is the importance of social media for business owners who are independent?
Social media marketing for independent business owners, in my opinion, plays the great equalizer. Don’t have a ton of money to spend on promoting your business? Social media enables business owners online to overcome those roadblocks.
Sure you may not have a lot of money to buy people’s attention, but it doesn’t mean you can’t attract attention from people who may actually be looking for what you have.
One of the best things about social media is if you have something people are willing to talk about and share, they will do the promotion for you.
No amount of money can buy that kind of attention.
Word of mouth is way more powerful than people believe. It really comes down to your content and how you package it. Also, another thing to keep in mind, over-saturation.
Is Social Media The Best Type of Marketing?
Now I know that social media may be the most cost-friendly or appear to be the easiest to get results with; but there’s something you must understand.
What if everyone decides they’re going to use social media for marketing due to the fact that it’s so easy to use.
Please listen when I tell you, just because it’s easier to use for business, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best thing for your business.
No exaggeration, there are literally a bunch of ways you can market your business online.
Just to name a few, here are the most utilized:
- Social Media Marketing
- Email Marketing
- Content Marketing
- Search Engine Marketing (Blogging)
Now, if I had to recommend a more powerful and effective strategy, I would absolutely recommend building a website and blogging using (SEO) search engine marketing. It helps you attract more quality prospects and stand out more as you build your authority online.
But, we’ll get more into that a little bit later – for now, let’s get into businesses and how they use social media to market online.
How Businesses Use Social Media for Marketing
How businesses use social media for marketing, tends to vary. There is no one specific way to promote on Instagram. Not every business will use pinterest to promote their products and services.
Whether a business chooses to have a Linkedin profile or chooses to promote on any other social network, it all depends on one thing. It really comes down to their social strategy.
What’s the purpose of you using social media?
Are you looking to create more awareness? Are you looking to attract more potential? What about your current customers? Are you looking to keep them engaged and spreading the word about your business for you?
This is why I say, how a business is promoted on social media, depends on the strategy and goals of the business.
Know The Purpose of Each Platform
Now when it comes to marketing, we tend to think, it’s better to be everywhere.
I mean, the more places we are, the more likely we’re able to reach more people, right?
Just a heads up, that’s not the case at all. In reality, you’re actually missing the people that matter the most. It’s important you understand not everybody will buy what you’re selling.
So that’s why I recommend you become more efficient with both your time and prospecting skills. Both are important when it comes to creating success online. What’s also important is understanding something called your Target Market.
I actually teach on this quite a bit due to the fact that it’s such an important principle to understand. It’s more effective to talk to a bunch of the right people, rather than talk to a bunch of people in general.
Otherwise you’ll be talking to a ton of people who could care less about what you have to offer.
Once you start learning about your target market, you’ll also understand that where you promote, depends on what you’re selling and where your ideal customers are likely hanging out.
Also, each social network is known for certain types of media:
- Instagram – Images & Videos
- Facebook – URL’s, Images, Videos & Text
- Twitter – Text, URL’s, Videos & Images
- Pinterest – Images & Videos
- LinkedIn – URL’s, Images & Videos
Now that you understand the types of content each site values, it’s up to you to choose which site works best for you. Don’t just do what you hear is working for others. Find what works best for you and your business.
