Why is prospecting difficult for some salespeople online?

Is it really as hard as people make it out to be? Truth is, it all depends.

Like many others, I struggled with prospecting initially when I first started applying the skill set. Now that I have a better understanding of the subject, I want to share a few key points that can help you overcome the prospecting hurdle as well. First things first, there were a number of factors that came into play that held me back from excelling. 

I’ll be explaining those factors throughout this post, so make sure you pay very close attention.

Why Is Prospecting An Important Activity for Salespeople?

If you haven’t already read the post I created called, “What is Prospecting in Sales?”, I recommend you go do so now. I talk about how if you don’t know how to successfully prospect, it can be a big reason why your sales numbers may not be as good as you’d like them to be. It’s the first step in an ideal sales process for bringing in new customers and business.

Why Is Prospecting Difficult for Some Salespeople

Another reason prospecting is so important is because it allows you to identify a message and sales approach your ideal buyers are more likely to be sold on. When you look for ideal customers, connect and ask questions about them, you can then use the information to craft a pitch that’s aimed at giving your prospects what they’re looking for.

The more you’re able to give potential buyers what they’re looking for, the more it will be reflected in your sales numbers.

Why Do Salespeople Dislike Prospecting?

So why do salespeople dislike prospecting so much? Well, to start with the first reason, it’s because they don’t realize the importance of it. Or, they may just be focused on bringing in cash as soon as possible.

Bottom line, prospecting can take a long time. 

And let’s be honest, people don’t like to spend a lot of time doing something they may not see as valuable. Which is why I must say, if you understand how important prospecting is for your business, you’re willing to put in as much time as you need to make sure you’re doing it right.

Sure it may take an hour to find a few people who are ideal buyers for your products or services.

The question then becomes, how serious are you really about building your business?

What Are Some of the Challenges of Prospecting?

Now I stated that time consumption is one of the reasons why people dislike prospecting above. But the truth is, that’s not the only reason people dislike the activity. An additional challenge people tend to face when prospecting, is being able to follow up and stay in touch with the prospects they do find.

What Are Some of the Challenges of Prospecting

If you’re wondering why is prospecting difficult for some salespeople, pay attention to what I’m about to share with you.

I mean think about it for a second.

You spend all of this time looking for potential customers and for what? Just so you can move on and find some more prospects tomorrow? Of course finding new prospects every day is awesome, but what about the ones you found the day before.

If you want to fix this issue, it’s about time you start utilizing prospect lists. There is a post I created where I actually talk about how you can store and stay in contact with prospects you find using Facebook. You should check out the post now to get a better understanding of how it works.

But just a heads up, the prospect lists I talk about are useless if you don’t learn how to prospect efficiently.

How to Prospect for Sales

Now the best sales prospecting methods can vary depending on what platform you’re using. But since I talked about Facebook above, we’re going to stick with the platform to prospect for sales. 

First steps when it comes to finding prospects on Facebook, is using the Facebook graph search. What the graph search functions as, is a search engine for the entire platform. So there are literally tons of ways you can search for and find prospects.

Why Is Prospecting An Important Activity for Salespeople

Here are some things you can search for to find ideal customers:

  • People who like (something similar to what you’re selling)
  • People who live in (location ideal for your business)
  • Friends of friends who like (something similar to what you’re selling)

How Can I Get Better at Prospecting?

So why is prospecting difficult for some salespeople? Again, it usually has to do with time and misunderstanding. People don’t like to spend a lot of time on things that don’t produce a near immediate impact on their business.

Sure prospecting doesn’t pay you for applying it, but the end result if you do it right pays off, literally. The more you learn about prospecting and customer avatars, the more you’ll appreciate prospecting and benefit from utilizing it more often.

I used to work with a company whose primary sales was prospecting and I agree with you about it being time-consuming and some people not understanding the concept and how important it is to a business. I was taught it was a numbers thing, and the more people you talked with the easier it became. But at the same time, it was very discouraging when you haven’t figured out the technique yet and it’s easier to just stop. But then your dreams stop too the moment you give up. Thank you for showing me how to keep going.

  2. I can tell you, I have a few years in sales, and I know from first hand experience that Prospecting is important. Well, Prospecting is all for me.
